Heaven
The song Heaven began as a spontaneous song during one of our morning prayer times. Each day at St Thomas Philadelphia we begin the day with a time of worship and prayer and it’s often in these times that God takes us to new places before the wider church services. On one of these days the lyrics came to me “one day I will stand in Heaven, and I will see my saviour face to face”. We began singing it together and the worship moved to a new level. When the prayer time finished I immediately recorded the melody and lyric, then later that day began exploring it as a song.
The rest of the song came quite quickly as I had been thinking quite a bit about Heaven and the tension between life on earth and the desire to be with Jesus. As with a few songs I have written, I wanted there to be an outward shift in the song that required some kind of response. This came in the form of the bridge which says “I’m alive for such a time as this”.
I’ve been surprised by the response to this song. Within a short time of finishing it I found a number of people had been very impacted by it. It has also seemed to meet people in their grief and loss too as I have been asked to play it at several funerals as a song of hope of the true life Jesus brings beyond this world.
