We Believe In God The Father

Posted by: pete   in Stories Behind The Songs...

After talking with my wife, Nicky about the strength of factual songs about God, I decided to write one. I was interested by her point that some people may engage more in sung worship through these type of songs and less through the personal ones (i.e lyrically between God and me/us).

I couldn’t think of a better place to start than with the Apostles Creed and set about writing a song that championed the truths of our faith. There is something powerful about corporately singing truths that have been chanted, shouted and sung through the centuries by God’s church worldwide.

This song came quite quickly as most of the lyric content was there and I didn’t want to stray far from it. It was a work in progress though for some time, as even after I had introduced it at St Thomas Philadelphia it became clear that something was missing. I always wanted the chorus to be simple and underpin the verses and not the other way round, which is probably a little unusual for a song, but it still felt like something more needed to be said.

I began to think about how we are here on earth for a window of time. Many people have gone before and many will come after but you and I are here right now. Unlike humanity, God has always been present and watched as the people of the world come and go. After meditating on this and then coming back to reality, it began to form the basis of what I wanted to write about. The second half of the chorus was added almost 2 years after the original song was written and when these lyrics were added it felt complete.  This second half intentionally draws the worshipper into engaging with the eternal God and calls for a response “This is what we believe!”

We believe in God the Father, maker of the heavens and the earth
In Jesus Christ His Son, our Lord and Saviour born by virgin birth
Sing Glory in the highest
Sing Glory in the highest

He was crucified and “it is finished” then His body laid to rest
Descending into hell He crushed it’s power and rose victorious
Sing Glory in the highest
Sing Glory in the highest

To the God who was
The God who is
The God who is to come
Your name resounds through history
And echoes to eternity, and will never change
This is what we believe

He ascended into Heaven to be seated at the Fathers side
And shall return in splendour heralding the everlasting life
Sing Glory in the highest
Sing Glory in the highest

He has sent His Spirit to empower us to complete the work on earth
When every knee shall bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!
Sing Glory in the highest
Sing Glory in the highest

I love this song – the bassline/bass drum in the verse is like a heartbeat, persistently driving the song through to the heart opening up for Sing Glory & the chorus.
